About Our Data

How rankings are built

Countries without a published value for an indicator are left out of its ranking entirely rather than sorted to the bottom — a missing observation is not a zero. Each table states how many of the 240 countries and territories it actually ranks. Tied values share a rank.

Where the numbers come from

Most indicators come from the World Bank's open data, with Our World in Data supplying median age, schooling, HDI, happiness, CO₂ and obesity. Population history and projections are UN World Population Prospects 2024. The source and year appear beside every value.

Two categories without a league table

Government and Travel are reference directories, not rankings. We hold qualitative data for them — systems of government, time zones, driving sides, airports — and ranking countries on those would mean inventing a scale that does not exist.

Comparing two countries

Rankings show where a country sits among all others. To put two side by side across every indicator at once, use the comparison tool.
