Dhaka

Dhaka is the capital and largest city of Bangladesh, with a metropolitan population exceeding 22 million people, making it one of the world's most densely populated cities. Located on the banks of the Buriganga River, Dhaka is the economic, political, and cultural heart of Bangladesh, serving as the nation's primary driver of growth and development.

Dhaka's history dates back over 400 years to the Mughal period when it served as the capital of Bengal Subah. The city was known for its muslin textiles. Under British rule, Dhaka declined before reviving as East Pakistan's capital (1947-1971). Bangladesh's independence in 1971 made Dhaka the national capital, triggering explosive growth.

Dhaka is Bangladesh's economic engine, generating about 35% of national GDP. The garment industry is the backbone, making Bangladesh the world's second-largest apparel exporter. Other sectors include pharmaceuticals, IT, construction, and services. Motijheel is the commercial hub. Despite growth, the informal sector employs millions.

Dhaka's culture blends Bengali traditions with Islamic influences. Pohela Boishakh (Bengali New Year) is celebrated grandly. The city is known for rickshaw art, traditional music, and vibrant textiles. Street food culture thrives with dishes like biryani, kacchi, and fuchka. The National Museum and Liberation War Museum preserve history.

Dhaka's transportation is dominated by rickshaws—the city has over 500,000, more than anywhere else. The Dhaka Metro Rail began operations in 2022. Buses, CNGs (auto-rickshaws), and ride-hailing apps serve the city. Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport handles international flights. Traffic congestion is legendary.

Dhaka faces extreme challenges: among the world's worst traffic congestion, severe air and water pollution, flooding, inadequate infrastructure, overcrowding, and climate vulnerability (sea level rise threatens the low-lying nation). Population density strains all services. Many residents lack access to safe water and sanitation.
