Shanghai was a small fishing village until opening as a treaty port after the First Opium War (1842). The International Settlement and French Concession made it a cosmopolitan hub in the early 20th century, earning the nickname 'Paris of the East.' Communist victory in 1949 brought nationalization. Economic reforms since 1990, particularly Pudong's development, transformed Shanghai into a global megacity.

Shanghai has China's highest GDP per capita and is a global financial center hosting the Shanghai Stock Exchange (world's third-largest). Key sectors include finance, trade, shipping, manufacturing, and technology. The Shanghai Free Trade Zone experiments with economic liberalization. Major multinationals have China headquarters in Shanghai. The city is a center for automotive, semiconductor, and biotech industries.

Shanghai culture blends Chinese traditions with international influences from its treaty port history. Shanghainese cuisine features soup dumplings (xiaolongbao), hairy crab, and red braised pork. The city is known for jazz history, Art Deco architecture, and contemporary art. Fashion, nightlife, and dining scenes are sophisticated. The Shanghai Museum houses one of China's finest art collections.

Shanghai has China's most comprehensive metro system (over 800 km). The Maglev train connects Pudong Airport at 430 km/h—world's fastest commercial train. Two major airports (Pudong and Hongqiao) serve the city. High-speed rail connects to Beijing in 4.5 hours and all major Chinese cities. The world's busiest container port handles billions in trade.

Shanghai faces challenges including housing affordability, traffic congestion despite extensive metro, aging population, environmental quality, and typhoon/flood risk as a coastal city. Competition with Hong Kong and Shenzhen for business investment continues. COVID-19 lockdowns in 2022 damaged the city's business reputation. Economic slowdown affects real estate and finance sectors.
