Shanghai is China's largest city by population and the world's busiest container port. Two major airports (Pudong and Hongqiao) serve the city. High-speed rail connects to Beijing in 4.5 hours and all major Chinese cities. The world's busiest container port handles billions in trade.

Shanghai faces challenges including housing affordability, traffic congestion despite extensive metro, aging population, environmental quality, and typhoon/flood risk as a coastal city. Competition with Hong Kong and Shenzhen for business investment continues. COVID-19 lockdowns in 2022 damaged the city's business reputation. Economic slowdown affects real estate and finance sectors.
