Tokyo

Originally a fishing village called Edo, the city became Japan's political center in 1603 when Tokugawa Ieyasu established his shogunate there. Renamed Tokyo ('Eastern Capital') in 1868 during the Meiji Restoration, it has twice been devastated—by the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake and 1945 firebombing—and rebuilt. Tokyo hosted the Olympics in 1964 and 2020, showcasing Japan's recovery and technological prowess.

Tokyo is one of the world's largest financial centers, hosting the Tokyo Stock Exchange (third-largest globally), headquarters of major corporations (Toyota, Sony, Honda, Mitsubishi), and a thriving startup ecosystem. Key sectors include finance, technology, media, manufacturing, and services. Tokyo contributes about one-third of Japan's GDP. The city is a global leader in robotics, gaming, and consumer electronics innovation.

Tokyo is a cultural powerhouse, from traditional arts (kabuki, tea ceremony, sumo) to pop culture (anime, manga, video games, fashion). Harajuku street fashion influences global trends. The city has the most Michelin-starred restaurants in the world. Museums, galleries, and theaters abound. Each neighborhood has distinct character—from the electronics mecca of Akihabara to the luxury of Ginza and the youth culture of Shibuya.

Tokyo's transportation system is legendary for punctuality and efficiency. The JR Yamanote line circles central Tokyo, while numerous subway lines connect every corner. Shinkansen (bullet trains) depart from Tokyo Station. Narita and Haneda airports serve international flights. The city is extremely walkable and bikeable. Trains run until midnight with limited late-night services.

Tokyo faces significant challenges: an aging and declining population, extremely high cost of living, limited space leading to tiny apartments, devastating earthquake risk (70% chance of major quake in 30 years), overcrowded trains during rush hour, and work-life balance issues. Climate change brings increasingly powerful typhoons and extreme heat.
