São Paulo

São Paulo was founded by Jesuits in 1554. It remained a small town until the coffee boom of the late 19th century triggered explosive growth and massive immigration from Italy, Japan, Lebanon, and other countries. Industrialization in the 20th century made São Paulo Brazil's economic engine. The city grew from 240,000 in 1900 to over 22 million today—one of history's most rapid urbanizations.

São Paulo is Latin America's largest economy. The city hosts the B3 (Brazil's stock exchange), major banks, and headquarters of Brazilian and multinational corporations. Key sectors include finance, services, manufacturing, technology, and media. The pharmaceutical, automotive, and food industries are major employers. The informal economy is also significant. Avenida Paulista is the financial heart.

São Paulo's culture reflects its immigrant heritage. The city has the world's largest Japanese diaspora outside Japan, significant Italian, Lebanese, and Northeastern Brazilian communities. Culinary diversity is exceptional—Japanese, Italian, Lebanese, and traditional Brazilian cuisines thrive. The art scene includes the São Paulo Biennial (world's oldest art biennial), museums, and street art. Nightlife is legendary.

São Paulo's metro and urban rail system is extensive but overcrowded. The city is infamous for traffic—among the world's worst. Helicopter commuting is common for executives (the city has one of the largest helicopter fleets globally). Congonhas Airport serves domestic flights; Guarulhos International handles international traffic. Buses are the primary mass transit.

São Paulo faces severe traffic congestion (average 3-hour daily commutes), inequality (favelas versus luxury high-rises), crime and violence, water scarcity (2014-2015 crisis), air pollution, and strained public services. Flooding occurs regularly. The city sprawls with limited planning. Housing affordability and homelessness are growing issues. Climate change intensifies extreme weather.
