Delhi

Delhi, officially the National Capital Territory of Delhi, is India's capital and second-largest city by population. The Delhi metropolitan area exceeds 32 million people, making it one of the world's largest urban agglomerations. Delhi has been continuously inhabited for millennia and served as a capital of various kingdoms and empires. Modern Delhi combines ancient monuments, colonial architecture, and rapidly developing modern infrastructure.

Delhi's history spans over 5,000 years, with evidence of habitation since the 6th century BCE. The city has been destroyed and rebuilt at least seven times. It was the seat of the Delhi Sultanate (1206-1526) and Mughal Empire (1526-1857). The British moved the capital from Calcutta to Delhi in 1911, building New Delhi as a purpose-built administrative capital designed by Edwin Lutyens. India gained independence in 1947.

Delhi has one of India's largest metropolitan economies, driven by IT, telecommunications, real estate, media, and services. Connaught Place and South Delhi are major commercial centers. Gurgaon (Gurugram) in the National Capital Region is a major corporate hub. The informal sector is significant. Delhi is India's retail capital with a mix of modern malls and traditional markets like Chandni Chowk.

Delhi's culture reflects its role as a historic capital and modern melting pot. Mughal cuisine, monuments, and art deeply influence the city. Delhi is known for its street food (chaat, paratha, kebabs), diverse cuisine from across India, and vibrant markets. Festivals of all religions are celebrated. The city has numerous museums, galleries, and performance venues. Delhi's wedding industry is enormous.

Delhi Metro, one of the world's largest metro networks, transformed urban mobility. Auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws, buses, and ride-hailing apps serve local transport. Indira Gandhi International Airport is India's busiest. Major railway stations connect Delhi to all of India. Traffic congestion is severe, and the government implements odd-even vehicle restrictions periodically.

Delhi faces severe air pollution—often the world's most polluted major city—caused by vehicles, industry, construction, and crop burning. Water scarcity affects millions. Traffic congestion, inadequate waste management, and slums housing millions are pressing issues. Extreme summer heat (45°C+) and winter fog disrupt life. Crime and safety, particularly for women, remain concerns.
