Zürich

Zurich was founded as a Roman customs post called Turicum. It became a free imperial city in 1218 and joined the Swiss Confederacy in 1351. The city was central to the Protestant Reformation under Huldrych Zwingli in 1519. Zurich's neutrality during both World Wars made it a haven for refugees and wealth, establishing its role as a global banking center. The Dada art movement was born here in 1916.

Zurich is one of the world's leading financial centers, hosting UBS, Credit Suisse (now part of UBS), Swiss Re, and Zurich Insurance. The city has Switzerland's stock exchange and serves as a hub for private banking and wealth management. Beyond finance, Zurich has a thriving technology sector, with Google's largest European engineering office. The city has the highest GDP per capita of any European city.

Zurich offers world-class cultural institutions including the Kunsthaus (art museum), Zurich Opera House, and Tonhalle Orchestra. The Old Town (Altstadt) features medieval guild houses and narrow streets. The city has a vibrant nightlife scene, café culture, and excellent restaurants. Street Parade, Europe's largest techno festival, draws over a million visitors annually. Museums include the Swiss National Museum and FIFA World Football Museum.

Zurich has an excellent integrated public transport system (ZVV) including trams, buses, S-Bahn trains, and boats on the lake. The city is highly walkable and bike-friendly. Zurich Airport is Switzerland's largest, offering worldwide connections. High-speed trains connect to major European cities. The city's transport is known for legendary Swiss punctuality.

Zurich faces extremely high cost of living—among the world's most expensive cities. Housing is scarce and expensive, with long waiting lists. Integration of the international workforce (about 30% of residents are foreigners) presents challenges. Traffic congestion exists despite excellent public transport. Climate change threatens Alpine tourism and the city's water supply from glaciers.
