Lagos

Lagos is Nigeria's largest city and the most populous city in Africa, with a metropolitan population exceeding 15 million. Located on the Atlantic coast, Lagos was Nigeria's capital until 1991 and remains the country's economic powerhouse. The city is known for its vibrant energy, traffic, music scene, and rapid growth. Lagos is projected to potentially become the world's largest city by 2100.

Lagos began as a Yoruba settlement before Portuguese colonizers arrived in the 15th century. It became a major slave trade port. Britain seized Lagos in 1861 and made it the colonial capital. Lagos remained Nigeria's capital until 1991, when government functions moved to Abuja. Despite no longer being the capital, Lagos has grown explosively and remains Nigeria's commercial center.

Lagos generates about one-third of Nigeria's GDP and is West Africa's financial hub. Key sectors include finance, oil and gas services, manufacturing, trade, and entertainment. The port handles most of Nigeria's trade. Nollywood, based in Lagos, is Africa's largest film industry. The tech scene is growing, with Lagos as the startup capital of Africa. The informal economy is massive.

Lagos is the creative capital of Africa. Afrobeats music, pioneered here, has global influence. Nollywood produces thousands of films annually. The art scene thrives with galleries, fashion weeks, and festivals. Lagos nightlife is legendary. The city's energy and hustle are famous—survival requires adaptability and resilience. Each neighborhood has distinct character, from upscale Victoria Island to historic Lagos Island.

Traffic congestion in Lagos is legendary—commutes of 3+ hours are common. The BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) provides some relief. A light rail is under development. 'Okadas' (motorcycle taxis) and 'danfos' (minibuses) are common but dangerous. Murtala Muhammed International Airport serves the city. Ferry services cross the lagoon. Uber and Bolt operate widely.

Lagos faces severe challenges: chronic traffic congestion, inadequate infrastructure (power outages, water scarcity), flooding, pollution, housing shortages, crime, and a massive informal economy. The population grows by over 3% annually, straining all services. Climate change threatens this coastal, low-lying city. Poverty coexists with extreme wealth.
