Karachi

Karachi is Pakistan's largest city and main port, with a metropolitan population exceeding 17 million. Located on the Arabian Sea coast, Karachi serves as Pakistan's financial and commercial capital, generating about 25% of national GDP. The city is a melting pot of ethnicities from across Pakistan and beyond.

Karachi was a small fishing village until British colonization in 1839 transformed it into a major port. It served as Pakistan's first capital (1947-1959) after independence. Massive migration during Partition and later from across Pakistan created today's diverse megacity. Political and ethnic tensions have marked recent decades.

Karachi is Pakistan's economic powerhouse, home to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, major banks, and industries. The port handles 95% of Pakistan's foreign trade. Key sectors include finance, textiles, pharmaceuticals, IT, and manufacturing. The informal economy is substantial. Economic challenges include infrastructure gaps and security concerns.

Karachi's culture reflects its diversity—Muhajirs (partition migrants), Sindhis, Pashtuns, Punjabis, and others create a unique mix. The food scene spans biryani, nihari, kebabs, and seafood. The city has theaters, galleries, and a vibrant literary scene. Beach culture at Clifton and Sea View is popular. Karachi is Pakistan's fashion capital.

Karachi's public transit is limited despite massive population. Buses, rickshaws, and taxis dominate. The Green Line BRT began operations in 2022. Jinnah International Airport serves domestic and international flights. Traffic congestion is severe. A circular railway and metro are under development.

Karachi faces immense challenges: water scarcity, power outages, severe traffic, poor waste management, inadequate infrastructure, crime, and ethnic/political violence. Informal settlements house millions. Climate change brings extreme heat and flooding. Despite these challenges, Karachi's entrepreneurial spirit persists.
