Istanbul

Istanbul is Turkey's largest city and economic heart, straddling both Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus strait. With a metropolitan population exceeding 15 million, it's one of the world's great megacities. As the former capital of Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires, Istanbul's historical significance is unmatched. The city blends East and West, ancient and modern, secular and religious in unique ways.

Founded as Byzantium around 657 BCE, the city became Constantinople in 330 CE when Constantine made it the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire's capital. It was the world's largest city for centuries. The Ottoman conquest in 1453 began 470 years of Ottoman rule, with the city renamed Istanbul. After the Turkish Republic formed in 1923, the capital moved to Ankara, but Istanbul remained Turkey's cultural and economic center.

Istanbul generates about 31% of Turkey's GDP. The city is a regional financial hub with the Borsa Istanbul stock exchange. Key sectors include finance, manufacturing, textiles, tourism, shipping, and technology. The city's strategic location makes it a trading hub between Europe, Middle East, and Central Asia. Tourism is massive—the city attracts 15+ million international visitors annually.

Istanbul's culture reflects its layered history. Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques, and Greek Orthodox patriarchate coexist. Turkish cuisine is legendary—kebabs, meze, baklava, Turkish coffee, and tea culture. The Grand Bazaar has operated for 500+ years. Contemporary art scenes thrive in Beyoğlu. Istanbul has an expanding metro system and historic tram lines. Ferries cross the Bosphorus constantly—an essential commuter link. Two major airports: Istanbul Airport (new, one of world's largest) and Sabiha Gökçen on the Asian side. Marmaray rail tunnel under the Bosphorus connects Europe and Asia. Traffic congestion is severe, especially on bridge crossings.

Istanbul faces challenges including major earthquake risk (experts predict a 7.0+ quake within 30 years), traffic congestion, air pollution, unplanned urbanization, and political tensions affecting tourism and investment. The Syrian refugee influx has strained services. Water resources from distant reservoirs face climate pressure. Economic instability and currency volatility affect residents.
