Santiago

Santiago was founded in 1541 by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia as Santiago del Nuevo Extremo. The city faced Mapuche attacks and earthquakes but grew steadily as Chile's capital. Independence came in 1818. The 20th century brought industrialization and rapid growth. The 1973 coup and Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990) shaped modern Chile. Democratic transition brought economic growth and development.

Santiago is Chile's economic engine, generating about 45% of national GDP. The city hosts the Santiago Stock Exchange (Latin America's third-largest), headquarters of major corporations, and is a center for mining company administration (Chile is the world's largest copper producer). Key sectors include finance, services, retail, technology, and tourism. Wine regions surround the city.

Santiago's culture blends Spanish colonial heritage with indigenous Mapuche influences and modern cosmopolitan character. The city has excellent museums, including the Museum of Memory and Human Rights documenting the Pinochet era. Chilean cuisine features empanadas, cazuela, and pastel de choclo, accompanied by world-class wines. The arts scene is vibrant, with theaters and cultural centers throughout the city.

Santiago Metro is one of Latin America's best with 7 lines and over 130 stations. Transantiago bus system complements the metro. The city is relatively car-dependent with significant traffic. Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport is South America's 4th busiest. Bicycle infrastructure is expanding. The Andes are accessible for skiing within 1-2 hours.

Santiago faces severe air pollution, particularly in winter when thermal inversion traps smog in the valley. Water scarcity is increasing due to climate change affecting Andean glaciers. Earthquake risk is high (major quake in 2010). Social inequality sparked protests in 2019. Housing affordability in desirable areas is challenging. Traffic congestion is significant.
