Santiago

Santiago is the capital and largest city of Chile, with a metropolitan population exceeding 7 million—about 40% of the country's total population. Located in a valley surrounded by the Andes mountains and the Chilean Coast Range, Santiago offers stunning mountain views on clear days. The city is South America's most prosperous capital, with the highest GDP per capita in the region and a high quality of life.

Santiago was founded in 1541 by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia as Santiago del Nuevo Extremo. The city faced Mapuche attacks and earthquakes but grew steadily as Chile's capital. Independence came in 1818. The 20th century brought industrialization and rapid growth. The 1973 coup and Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990) shaped modern Chile. Santiago Metro is one of Latin America's best with 7 lines and over 130 stations. Transantiago bus system complements the metro. The city is relatively car-dependent with significant traffic. Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport is South America's 4th busiest. Bicycle infrastructure is expanding. The Andes are accessible for skiing within 1-2 hours.

Santiago faces severe air pollution, particularly in winter when thermal inversion traps smog in the valley. Water scarcity is increasing due to climate change affecting Andean glaciers. Earthquake risk is high (major quake in 2010). Social inequality sparked protests in 2019. Housing affordability in desirable areas is challenging. Traffic congestion is significant.
