New York City

Originally inhabited by Lenape people, the area was settled by the Dutch in 1624 as New Amsterdam. The British took control in 1664, renaming it New York. The city served as the first U.S. capital (1789-1790). Massive immigration in the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly through Ellis Island, shaped the city's diverse character. NYC was devastated by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

New York City's economy is the largest of any city in the world. Wall Street dominates global finance. The city is a center for media (publishing, broadcasting, advertising), technology (Silicon Alley), fashion, law, and accounting. Tourism brings over 65 million visitors annually. The creative economy spans Broadway theater, art galleries, and music. Real estate is a major industry.

NYC is among the world's most culturally diverse cities, with nearly 40% foreign-born residents. The city has unparalleled museums (Met, MoMA, Guggenheim), theaters (Broadway), and music venues. Each neighborhood has distinct ethnic character—Chinatown, Little Italy, Jackson Heights. NYC is the birthplace of hip-hop, punk, disco, and modern comedy. The culinary scene spans every global cuisine.

The NYC subway operates 24/7 with 472 stations—the most of any system. Yellow taxis are iconic, joined by ride-sharing apps. Commuter rail (LIRR, Metro-North, NJ Transit) serves the region. Three major airports (JFK, LaGuardia, Newark) handle over 140 million passengers annually. Ferries connect waterfront areas. The city is highly walkable.

NYC faces challenges including extreme housing costs and homelessness, income inequality, aging infrastructure, traffic congestion, and climate change vulnerability (sea level rise, extreme weather). The subway system needs modernization. Post-pandemic recovery has been uneven. Crime, though historically low, has risen in certain categories. Affordability threatens the city's diversity.
