Nairobi

Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya, with a metropolitan population of about 5 million. Located at 1,795 meters elevation on the edge of the East African highlands, Nairobi enjoys a pleasant climate despite its equatorial location. The city serves as East Africa's commercial, financial, and transport hub and is the only city in the world with a national park (Nairobi National Park) within its borders where wildlife roams freely.

Nairobi was founded in 1899 as a railway depot on the Uganda Railway. The name derives from Maasai 'Enkare Nairobi' meaning 'cool water.' It became Kenya's capital in 1907, replacing Mombasa. The city grew as a colonial administrative center and later as independent Kenya's capital from 1963. Nairobi has experienced rapid growth, particularly since the 1990s.

Nairobi is East Africa's business hub, hosting regional headquarters for the UN, international organizations, and multinational corporations. Key sectors include finance (Nairobi Securities Exchange), technology (iHub, 'Silicon Savannah'), tourism, manufacturing, and services. M-Pesa mobile money was developed here and transformed African finance. The informal sector (jua kali) employs many residents.

Nairobi is a cultural melting pot with over 40 Kenyan ethnic groups plus international residents. The city has a thriving arts scene, contemporary galleries, and music venues. Kenyan cuisine features nyama choma (grilled meat), ugali, and sukuma wiki. The craft beer scene is growing. Nairobi is known for marathon runners and athletics. Wildlife conservation centers dot the outskirts.

Nairobi's traffic congestion (called 'jams') is severe. Matatus (decorated minibuses) are the primary public transport alongside conventional buses. The Standard Gauge Railway connects to Mombasa. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is East Africa's busiest. Nairobi Expressway (2022) reduced CBD congestion. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt are popular. A BRT system is planned.

Nairobi faces challenges including traffic congestion, informal settlements (Kibera is Africa's largest slum), water scarcity, crime and security concerns, waste management, and air pollution. Rapid population growth strains infrastructure. Wildlife-human conflict occurs as the city expands toward parklands. Climate change affects water supplies. Inequality between affluent suburbs and slums is stark.
