Manila

Manila was a thriving Muslim settlement when Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi arrived in 1571 and established it as the colonial capital. For over three centuries, Manila was the center of Spanish trade in Asia, connecting the Americas with China through the famous Manila Galleon trade. Devastated during World War II (the Battle of Manila destroyed much of the historic city), Manila was rebuilt and became the capital of the independent Philippines in 1946.

Metro Manila is the Philippines' economic engine, generating about 36% of national GDP. Key sectors include business process outsourcing (BPO)—the Philippines is the world's call center capital—finance, retail, real estate, and manufacturing. Makati and Bonifacio Global City are major business districts with modern skyscrapers. Remittances from overseas Filipino workers significantly boost the economy.

Manila's culture reflects centuries of Spanish, American, and Asian influences. Filipinos are known for their hospitality, strong family ties, and love of celebration. Manila has a vibrant mall culture, with SM Mall of Asia being one of the world's largest shopping centers. Jeepneys—colorful converted jeeps—are iconic symbols. Music and karaoke are national passions, and Manila has a thriving arts and independent film scene.

Manila's transportation includes the LRT and MRT elevated rail lines, jeepneys, buses, and tricycles. Traffic congestion is among the world's worst, with commutes taking hours. Ride-hailing apps (Grab) are popular. Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is the main gateway, though it struggles with capacity. Ferry services connect to nearby islands.

Manila faces severe challenges: extreme traffic congestion, flooding during typhoons and monsoons, air and water pollution, informal settlements (many along waterways), and overcrowding. The city is vulnerable to earthquakes and typhoons. Despite government efforts, infrastructure struggles to keep pace with population growth.
