Lima

Before Spanish conquest, the Lima area was home to sophisticated pre-Columbian cultures. Pizarro founded Lima in 1535 as the 'City of Kings,' and it became the seat of Spanish colonial power in South America. The city's historic center, with colonial churches and balconies, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lima declared independence in 1821 and has since grown from a colonial city to a modern metropolis.

Lima dominates Peru's economy, generating about 48% of national GDP. Key sectors include financial services, manufacturing, textiles, mining headquarters, and increasingly IT and services. Lima is Peru's main port (Callao) and gateway for exports. The city has attracted significant foreign investment and has a growing middle class. Tourism, particularly gastronomic tourism, is increasingly important.

Lima has emerged as the gastronomic capital of Latin America, with restaurants like Central ranked among the world's best. The cuisine blends Indigenous, Spanish, African, Chinese, and Japanese influences—ceviche, lomo saltado, and pisco sours are iconic. The city has numerous museums, including the Larco Museum with pre-Columbian art. Afro-Peruvian music and marinera dance are cultural treasures.

Lima's transportation includes the Metro (one line operational, more under construction), Metropolitano BRT bus system, and extensive regular bus routes. Traffic congestion is severe. The Jorge Chávez International Airport is a major South American hub. Taxis and ride-hailing (Uber, Cabify) are common. The historic center is walkable but spread-out districts require motorized transport.

Lima faces challenges including severe traffic congestion, air pollution, water scarcity (the city is built in a desert), informal settlements on hillsides, and earthquake risk. Income inequality is stark, with wealthy districts alongside impoverished areas. The garúa (coastal fog) and lack of sunshine for months affect residents' mood. Informal economy remains significant.
