Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires was first founded by Spanish explorers in 1536 but was abandoned due to indigenous resistance. Permanently established in 1580, it grew slowly under Spanish colonial rule. Following Argentine independence in 1816, the city became the federal capital in 1880. Massive European immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries shaped the city's diverse character, bringing influences from Italy, Spain, Germany, and beyond.

Buenos Aires is Argentina's economic center, contributing about 25% of the national GDP. Key sectors include finance, services, manufacturing, and technology. The city is a major agricultural processing and export hub. Argentina's economic instability has caused recurring challenges, but Buenos Aires maintains a diversified economy with growing tech and creative industries.

Buenos Aires is synonymous with tango, which originated in the city's working-class neighborhoods and is now a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The city has a vibrant literary tradition—Jorge Luis Borges was from here—and more bookstores per capita than any other city. Porteños (Buenos Aires residents) are known for their passion for psychoanalysis, football, and late-night dining. The theater scene rivals Broadway.

Buenos Aires has South America's oldest and largest subway system (Subte), opened in 1913. An extensive bus network (colectivos) covers the metropolitan area. The city has numerous rail lines connecting to suburbs. Two airports serve the city: Ministro Pistarini International (Ezeiza) for international flights and Aeroparque for domestic and regional flights.

Buenos Aires faces challenges including economic instability and inflation, urban sprawl, aging infrastructure, flooding in low-lying areas, and socioeconomic inequality with informal settlements (villas) on the periphery. Traffic congestion is severe despite good public transport. Climate change threatens the low-lying coastal areas.
