Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is the capital and second-most populous city of the United Arab Emirates, with about 1.5 million residents. Unlike flashy Dubai, Abu Dhabi is more conservative and cultural, housing the UAE's government, oil wealth, and world-class museums including the Louvre Abu Dhabi. The city controls 90% of UAE oil reserves and has used this wealth to build a modern, prosperous capital.

Abu Dhabi's Al Nahyan family has ruled since the 18th century. The settlement grew around freshwater wells on Abu Dhabi island. Oil was discovered in 1958, transforming a fishing village into a wealthy city. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (ruled 1966-2004) is revered as the 'Father of the Nation' who unified the Emirates and built modern Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi's economy is dominated by oil and gas—the emirate controls over 90% of UAE oil reserves. The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority is one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds. The city is diversifying into tourism, culture (Louvre, Guggenheim planned), renewable energy (Masdar City), and finance. Mubadala invests globally in aerospace, technology, and healthcare.

Abu Dhabi's culture is more traditional than Dubai's, with greater emphasis on Emirati heritage. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture. The Louvre Abu Dhabi houses world-class art. Qasr Al Hosn, the oldest building in Abu Dhabi, is now a museum. The city hosts Formula 1 (Yas Marina Circuit), major concerts, and cultural festivals. Falconry and camel racing are traditional pursuits.

Abu Dhabi has an extensive bus network but is car-dependent. Taxis and ride-hailing are common. Abu Dhabi International Airport serves as hub for Etihad Airways. A metro system is planned. The city connects to Dubai via highway (1.5 hours). Water taxis serve some areas. The city is less congested than Dubai.

Abu Dhabi faces extreme desert heat, water scarcity (100% desalinated water), and food import dependency. Diversifying the economy away from oil is the main strategic challenge. The city competes with Dubai for tourism and business. Labor conditions for migrant workers need improvement. Sustainability in an energy-intensive desert environment is a long-term concern.
