Tehran

Tehran is the capital and largest city of Iran, home to over 9 million people within city limits and approximately 16 million in the metropolitan area. Nestled at the foot of the Alborz Mountains, Tehran serves as Iran's political, economic, cultural, and educational center, blending ancient Persian heritage with modern urban development.

Tehran was a small village until the Safavid dynasty built walls around it in the 16th century. In 1796, the Qajar dynasty made Tehran the capital of Persia. The Pahlavi dynasty (1925-1979) modernized Tehran extensively. The 1979 Islamic Revolution transformed the city's character, though it continues to develop as the Islamic Republic's capital.

Tehran dominates Iran's economy, hosting the Tehran Stock Exchange and headquarters of major corporations. Key sectors include manufacturing, oil and gas administration, banking, and retail. The Grand Bazaar remains one of the world's largest covered markets.

Tehran is the center of contemporary Iranian culture—home to the National Museum, Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (with Picasso, Warhol, Rothko), and Golestan Palace. Persian cuisine features fragrant rice dishes, kebabs, and stews. Iranian cinema has gained international acclaim.

Tehran Metro serves millions daily with ongoing expansion. Buses, taxis, and ride-sharing apps (Snapp, Tapsi) complement public transit. Imam Khomeini International Airport handles international flights.

Tehran faces severe air pollution trapped against the Alborz Mountains, traffic congestion, water scarcity, earthquake risk, and housing affordability concerns. The city implements traffic restrictions and has expanded metro service.
