Moscow was founded in 1147 by Yuri Dolgorukiy. It became the center of Muscovy, which unified Russia. The city was burned during Napoleon's 1812 invasion. Moscow became Soviet capital in 1918, replacing St. Petersburg. The Soviet era brought rapid industrialization and expansion. The 1991 collapse of the USSR transformed Moscow into a capitalist metropolis. Recent years have seen major modernization.

Moscow dominates the Russian economy, generating about 25% of national GDP. The city hosts major Russian corporations including Gazprom, Rosneft, and Sberbank. Key sectors include oil and gas, finance, services, retail, and technology. Sanctions following the 2022 Ukraine invasion have significantly impacted the economy and foreign investment. Despite challenges, Moscow remains a major Eurasian economic hub.

Moscow's cultural life is extraordinarily rich. The Bolshoi Theatre is world-famous for ballet and opera. The Tretyakov Gallery houses the world's best Russian art collection. Soviet architecture coexists with historic churches and modern skyscrapers. Russian cuisine features borscht, blini, and caviar. The city has a vibrant nightlife and restaurant scene. Literary heritage from Tolstoy to Bulgakov pervades the city.

The Moscow Metro is one of the world's most beautiful and efficient systems, with 250+ stations many featuring chandeliers and art. The system carries 6+ million passengers daily. Three airports (Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo) serve the city. High-speed trains connect to St. Petersburg in 4 hours. Traffic congestion is severe despite major ring road investments.

Moscow faces significant challenges: geopolitical isolation following the Ukraine invasion, economic sanctions, brain drain of educated young professionals, extreme winter cold, traffic congestion, pollution, and income inequality. The housing market is strained. Political restrictions affect civil society and media. Climate change brings unusual weather patterns including record heat.
