Kuala Lumpur was founded in 1857 by Chinese tin miners at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers—the name means 'muddy confluence.' The British developed it as a colonial administrative center. It became Malaysia's capital at independence in 1957. Rapid development since the 1990s, championed by Prime Minister Mahathir, transformed KL into a modern Asian metropolis.

KL is Malaysia's economic powerhouse, hosting the Bursa Malaysia stock exchange, major banks, and corporate headquarters. Key sectors include finance, services, technology, tourism, and manufacturing. The MSC Malaysia initiative attracted tech companies. Petronas, the national oil company, is headquartered here. The city is a regional hub for Islamic finance. Shopping and medical tourism are significant.

KL's culture reflects Malaysia's ethnic diversity—Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous influences create a unique blend. The food scene is legendary, with hawker stalls, kopitiams, and fine dining serving nasi lemak, char kway teow, roti canai, and countless other dishes. Religious sites include mosques, temples, and churches. Festivals from all cultures are celebrated. The city is known for shopping malls.

KL has an extensive integrated transit system including LRT, MRT, monorail, and KTM commuter rail. The ERL express connects to KLIA airport in 28 minutes. Buses and ride-hailing (Grab) serve local transport. Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is a major Southeast Asian hub. Traffic congestion is significant, particularly during rush hours and monsoon rains.

KL faces challenges including traffic congestion, flash flooding during monsoons, air pollution (particularly from regional haze), income inequality, and housing affordability in central areas. Urban sprawl has increased commuting times. The city must balance development with heritage preservation. Water supply issues affect the metropolitan area periodically.
