Kolkata

Kolkata was founded in 1690 when the British East India Company established a trading post. It became the capital of British India in 1772 and remained so until 1911. The city was the center of the Bengal Renaissance, an intellectual and cultural awakening in the 19th century. Kolkata played a major role in India's independence movement. Partition in 1947 brought massive refugee influxes from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).

Kolkata was India's premier commercial city until the 1970s, when economic decline set in due to labor unrest and political instability. The city is now rebounding with growth in IT, financial services, and manufacturing. It remains a major hub for jute and tea trade. The Kolkata Port is one of India's oldest operating ports. The city is headquarters to several major Indian corporations.

Kolkata is India's cultural capital, producing Nobel laureates (Rabindranath Tagore, Amartya Sen, Mother Teresa), legendary filmmakers (Satyajit Ray), and renowned artists. Durga Puja is the city's biggest festival, celebrated with elaborate pandals (temporary structures) and considered UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Kolkata has a vibrant literary scene, with the world's largest book fair. The city is unique in India for its passionate football culture.

Kolkata has India's oldest metro system (opened 1984) and an extensive tramway—the only remaining tram network in India. Yellow Ambassador taxis were iconic until recently phased out. Hand-pulled rickshaws still operate in some areas, a unique feature. Ferries cross the Hooghly River. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport serves the city.

Kolkata faces challenges including aging infrastructure, traffic congestion, air pollution, flooding during monsoons, and urban poverty. Economic revival has been slower than other Indian metros. Many colonial-era buildings are in disrepair. The city struggles with slum populations and inadequate housing. Political factors have historically deterred investment.
