Johannesburg was founded in 1886 following the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand. It grew from a mining camp to a major city within years. Under apartheid (1948-1994), the city enforced racial segregation, with townships like Soweto housing Black workers. The 1976 Soweto Uprising was pivotal in the anti-apartheid struggle. Post-1994 Johannesburg has undergone transformation, though inequality persists.

Johannesburg is Africa's financial center, hosting the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (largest in Africa), major banks, and mining company headquarters. Key sectors include finance, mining, manufacturing, retail, and telecommunications. Sandton is Africa's richest square mile. The city is a continental hub for multinationals. Despite wealth, unemployment is high, and the informal economy is significant.

Johannesburg's culture reflects South Africa's diversity—eleven official languages are spoken. The city has a vibrant arts scene, with galleries like the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill, and Johannesburg Art Gallery telling its complex history. Music genres from kwaito to amapiano originated here. The food scene mixes traditional African, Indian, and international cuisines. Soweto offers township tourism.

Johannesburg's Gautrain rapid rail connects the airport, Sandton, and Pretoria. Metrobus and Rea Vaya BRT serve parts of the city. Most residents rely on private cars or minibus taxis. OR Tambo International Airport is Africa's busiest. The city is very car-dependent with extensive highways. Walking is limited in most areas. Uber is widely used.

Johannesburg faces severe crime and safety concerns, significant income inequality, high unemployment (especially youth), and housing shortages including informal settlements. Water and electricity supply are increasingly unreliable. Inner city decay affected areas like Hillbrow. The city struggles with integration post-apartheid. Air quality is affected by mining and industrial activity.
