Jakarta

Jakarta was known as Sunda Kelapa (a port town) before becoming Jayakarta in 1527 and then Batavia under Dutch colonial rule from 1619. It served as the capital of the Dutch East Indies for over 300 years. Renamed Jakarta after Indonesian independence in 1945, the city grew explosively from 1.5 million in 1950 to over 30 million in the metro area today.

Jakarta generates about 17% of Indonesia's GDP. The city is the center of finance, trade, and services. The Jakarta Stock Exchange is Southeast Asia's second-largest. Key sectors include banking, manufacturing, retail, and technology. Startups like Gojek and Tokopedia emerged here. The informal sector is massive. Inequality between wealthy areas and kampungs (urban villages) is stark.

Jakarta's culture reflects Indonesia's diversity with influences from Javanese, Sundanese, Chinese, Arab, and other communities. Bahasa Indonesia is the common language. The city has museums, theaters, and art galleries. Shopping malls are social centers. Street food culture is vibrant—nasi goreng, satay, and bakso are staples. Islamic traditions are significant. The music scene spans dangdut to modern pop.

Jakarta's traffic congestion is among the world's worst. The MRT (opened 2019) and LRT are expanding but still limited. TransJakarta BRT has the world's longest bus rapid transit network. Commuter trains connect suburbs. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is 20+ km from the center. Motorbikes and Gojek/Grab ride-hailing dominate. The city floods regularly, disrupting transport.

Jakarta faces existential challenges: the city is sinking (up to 25cm annually) while sea levels rise, causing severe flooding. Groundwater extraction, air pollution, traffic congestion, waste management, and inequality are critical issues. The government is moving the capital to Nusantara in Kalimantan (Borneo) by 2045. Poverty and informal settlements house millions.
