Casablanca

Casablanca is Morocco's largest city and principal port, with a metropolitan population of about 4 million. Located on the Atlantic coast, Casablanca is Morocco's economic capital and generates about 25% of the country's GDP. The city blends Moorish architecture with Art Deco and modernist buildings, a legacy of French colonial rule (1912-1956). Casablanca is home to the Hassan II Mosque, one of the world's largest.

The area has been inhabited since Berber times, with the city known as Anfa before Portuguese destruction in 1468. Rebuilt as Casa Branca (White House) by the Portuguese, it became Casablanca under Spanish influence. The city remained small until French colonization in 1907 brought rapid modernization. French architects created the Art Deco downtown. Independence came in 1956.

Casablanca is Morocco's business capital, hosting the Casablanca Stock Exchange (Africa's second-largest by market cap), major banks, and industrial facilities. Key sectors include finance, manufacturing, textiles, electronics, and port operations. The city handles about 60% of Morocco's industrial output. Tourism is significant but less dominant than in Marrakech. The informal sector employs many.

Casablanca culture blends Arab, Berber, French, and contemporary influences. The city is more cosmopolitan and liberal than traditional Moroccan cities. Art Deco architecture downtown contrasts with the traditional old medina. The culinary scene features Moroccan cuisine (tagine, couscous, pastilla) alongside French-influenced cafes. The film 'Casablanca' (1942) gave the city global fame, though it was filmed in Hollywood.

Casablanca has Morocco's only tramway system with two lines. A large bus network serves the city. Mohammed V International Airport is Morocco's busiest. Casa-Port and Casa-Voyageurs stations connect to high-speed and conventional rail (including Africa's first high-speed train to Tangier). The port is one of Africa's largest. Traffic congestion is significant.

Casablanca faces challenges including traffic congestion, housing shortages, informal settlements (bidonvilles), air and water pollution, and unemployment especially among youth. The gap between wealthy suburbs and poor neighborhoods is significant. The city struggles with preservation of historic architecture. Climate change brings water scarcity concerns. Industrial pollution affects coastal areas.
