Cairo

While the Cairo area has been inhabited since ancient Egypt, the modern city was founded in 969 CE by the Fatimid dynasty. It became the Islamic world's greatest city, center of learning and commerce. The Mamluks (1250-1517) built many of its finest mosques and monuments. Under the Ottoman Empire, Egypt retained autonomy. Cairo was modernized under Muhammad Ali in the 19th century and became a major colonial city under British influence.

Cairo is Egypt's economic hub, hosting government institutions, major banks, and the largest companies. Key sectors include services, trade, tourism, manufacturing, and construction. The informal economy employs millions. Khan el-Khalili bazaar continues centuries of commercial tradition. Cairo is also a major regional media center. Economic challenges include high unemployment, particularly among youth.

Cairo is the cultural heart of the Arab world, producing films, television, music, and literature that influence the entire region. Al-Azhar University, founded in 970 CE, is the Islamic world's oldest and most prestigious. The Egyptian Museum houses the world's greatest pharaonic collection. Cafés, called ahwas, are central to social life. Egyptian cuisine features dishes like koshari, ful medames, and molokhia.

Cairo Metro is Africa's first underground system, crucial for millions of commuters. Traffic congestion is legendary, with vehicles often at a standstill. Microbuses fill transit gaps. Cairo International Airport is the busiest in Africa. The Nile provides some ferry transport. Ride-hailing apps have transformed urban mobility. New highways and a monorail are under construction.

Cairo faces severe challenges: traffic congestion among the world's worst, air pollution, water pollution in the Nile, inadequate infrastructure, informal settlements (ashwa'iyat) housing millions, waste management, and urban sprawl. The population growth rate strains all services. Political instability following the 2011 revolution affected tourism and investment. A new administrative capital is being built east of Cairo.
