Brisbane was established as a penal colony in 1824 and opened to free settlers in 1842. Named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, it became Queensland's capital when the colony separated from New South Wales in 1859. Flooding has shaped the city's history, notably in 1893, 1974, and 2011.
