Bogotá

Bogotá was founded by Spanish conquistadors in 1538 on the site of the Muisca indigenous settlement of Bacatá. It served as the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Granada and later independent Colombia. The city suffered during decades of violence related to drug trafficking and guerrilla conflict but has dramatically improved since the 1990s.

Bogotá generates about 25% of Colombia's GDP. Key sectors include finance, services, manufacturing, and technology. The city is increasingly a startup hub. Major corporations are headquartered here. The informal sector remains significant. Economic growth has been steady, though inequality persists.

Bogotá's culture blends colonial heritage with contemporary creativity. The city has excellent museums (Gold Museum, Botero Museum), a thriving art scene, and growing culinary reputation. Street art in areas like La Candelaria is renowned. Music spans salsa, vallenato, and modern genres. Coffee culture is central.

Bogotá has one of the world's largest BRT systems (TransMilenio) but no metro (one is under construction). Bicycling is popular—the Ciclovía closes streets to cars on Sundays. El Dorado International Airport is a major hub. Traffic congestion is severe. Uber operates despite legal ambiguity.

Bogotá faces challenges including severe traffic congestion, inequality, inadequate public transit, air pollution, and security concerns (though vastly improved from the past). The elevation and traffic create air quality issues. Rapid urbanization has strained infrastructure.
