Manchester was a small town until the Industrial Revolution made it the world's first industrial city—'Cottonopolis' dominated global textile production. The city was where the first programmable computer was developed (1948). Industrial decline in the late 20th century was severe. The 1996 IRA bombing became a catalyst for regeneration. Today Manchester is one of the UK's fastest-growing cities.

Manchester's economy is diverse and the UK's fastest-growing outside London. Financial and professional services, creative and digital industries, manufacturing, and healthcare are key sectors. The city is home to major media operations (BBC, ITV). The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan drive research and innovation. Sports, music, and tourism are significant.

Manchester's cultural influence is enormous. The music scene produced Joy Division, The Smiths, Oasis, The Stone Roses, and countless others. The Haçienda nightclub pioneered acid house culture. Football is a religion—Manchester United and Manchester City have global followings. The city has excellent museums (Science and Industry Museum, Manchester Art Gallery) and a thriving arts scene. The Northern Quarter is the creative heart.

Manchester has the UK's largest light rail system (Metrolink), extensive buses, and local rail. Manchester Airport is the UK's third-busiest. Trains connect to London in 2 hours, with planned HS2 reducing this. The city is bike-friendly with growing cycling infrastructure. The center is walkable. Ring roads manage traffic.

Manchester faces challenges including significant inequality—some wards are among the UK's most deprived. Housing affordability is worsening. The city center can flood (River Irwell). Competition with London for investment and talent continues. Air quality needs improvement. The transformation has not benefited all communities equally.
